An apple a day!

(Hamburg)--Many folks say autumn wouldn't be complete without a trip to a local apple orchard. Marty Mincer would concur with that. Mincer, of Mincer Apple Orchard near Hamburg has been selling the delicious and nutritious fruit since he was a little boy.

Since fruit trees have been growing on the location of his farm since 1855, it made sense that Marty's grandpa continued the tradition when he bought the farm about half way between Sidney and Hamburg in 1914. In 1926 Marty's grandpa also sold the ground for beautiful Waubonsie State Park which lies adjacent to Mincer Orchard today just off of Highway 2.

Marty's folks decided to reestablish the orchard in the early sixties and the apple trees have been providing bountiful fruit ever since.

Mincer Orchard truly is a family orchard as Marty gets good help from his wife, Amy, and their children, Anna and Jackson. Marty's mother, Edna, 92-years young, is still nearby to provide support for the family business. He is especially proud of the nice decorative touches Amy has on display inside the orchard's retail space.

In peak selling season Marty will sell 41 different varieties of apples. Here in October you can still enjoy the varieties of Jonathan, Grimes, Red Delicious, Mutsu, Rome, Fuji and Golden Delicious. A variety of squash, gourds and pumpkins are also available for purchase inside the retail store. Folks also enjoy the refreshing apple cider Marty presses right there at the orchard. Even local honey is available.

Though the drought of 2012 diminished some of the overall color from Marty's apples, a few very timely rains helped immensely to provide a good overall crop with still some sizable fruit for the Mincers to sell to the public.

Previously a wholesale business, these days Mincer Orchard is 100% retail with the Mincer Orchard store open seven days a week in the afternoons from 1pm to 5pm.

When not tending to his orchard, Marty is a world-renowned ragtime pianist, performing at various venues locally and all around the midwest.

If you'd like to enjoy a memorable afternoon while enjoying some delicious apples head on over to Mincer Orchard. Chances are Marty will be there to greet you with a great big smile. He might even play a tune or two for you if you ask real nice!
