(Council Bluffs) -- Traffic flow between Council Bluffs and Omaha received a boost Wednesday afternoon.
Iowa Department of Transportation officials say Interstate 29 between I-680 near Crescent and North 25th Street in Council Bluffs, and I-680 from I-29 to the Nebraska border reopened to traffic at around 3 p.m. While all lanes of I-29 will be open, DOT officials say traffic will not be allowed to continue north of I-680 on I-29. For I-680, both westbound lanes will be open, and one eastbound lane will be available for traffic.
I-29 and 680 around Council Bluffs have been closed since late May due to flooding for a second time this spring. Part of the repairs from earlier flooding included adding stabilizing elements to the ditches on I-680 to minimize future flood damage. DOT officials say those elements have proven their worth, in that there is minimal damage from the second flooding incident where roadway, shoulder and slope area repairs were completed.
Interstate 29 remains closed from the Glenwood exit south to St. Joseph, as well as parts of Highways 34, 2, 275 and 333. Travelers should check 511ia.org for further information.
