(Tabor) -- The KMA Sports Legacy Award was created last year in conjunction with the KMA Sports Hall of Fame to honor people and/or groups that have made lasting impacts on KMAland athletics.

Over 10 decades, Ralph Carl and his family have had a lasting influence on Fremont-Mills athletics and education. For all of their efforts, the Carl Family is being honored as the now-named Eberly Family Legacy Award winner.

Carl started teaching at Tabor High School in 1928 and continued teaching there and at Fremont-Mills High School through 1972. After his retirement, he set up the Helen and Ralph Carl Foundation. The initial value of the assets was about $500,000.

A member of the Carl Family Foundation, Gean Clapper joined Upon Further Review on Friday to help announce the news.

“The foundation board decided to only spend the income from interest,” Clapper told KMA Sports, “giving 25 to 30,000 dollars per year for various school projects. Sending FM kids to summer camp, sending the football team to football camps.”

Part of the foundation was an 80-acre farm. Clapper says the board sold the farm and “realized another 300,000 dollars from that sale.”

“That gave us more money to spend for Ralph’s projects,” Clapper added.

Some of the recent donations from the foundation include a $200,000 gift to the Fremont-Mills fitness center and gymnasium and $300,000 for the football stadium, track and bleachers. That stadium is now aptly named Carl Stadium.

“The board decided a couple years ago to hold the assets that were available at that time in hopes that the Tabor community would get started on a new library funding project,” Clapper said. “That has started, and the Carl foundation has given 111,000 dollars for that library campaign.

“Ralph had a positive effect on the Fremont-Mills community from 1928 all the way up to 2018. So, basically 10 decades he’s had a positive impact on the community.”

Clapper says he even owes personal gratitude to his former teacher.

“I’m grateful to him because without him I probably would have not gotten through high school math. He was an F-M supporter, a scorekeeper at basketball games and in his first years teaching he helped coach the football and track teams in the 20s and 30s.”

We are very proud to announce the latest honoree of the Eberly Family Legacy Award in this year’s KMA Sports Hall of Fame class: The Ralph Carl Family!
