(Ames) -- Iowa State junior Maty Cancini has been named Big 12 Co-Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. She is just the third Cyclone tennis player ever to win the weekly award (Erin Karonis, 2009; Samantha Budai, 2017).
Cancini went undefeated on the final weekend of Big 12 play, upsetting a pair of nationally ranked foes in Texas' No. 29 Bianca Turati and Baylor's No. 61 Livia Kraus.
Her dominating 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kraus was key in Iowa State's first-ever win over Baylor, which snapped a 96-match losing streak to Big 12 schools from the state of Texas. The junior's comeback win over No. 29 Turati is one of the biggest upsets in Cyclone tennis history.
Cancini, along with her partner Annabella Bonadonna, were pivotal in clinching the doubles points against No. 6 Texas and Baylor. The duo went undefeated on the weekend in the No. 2 doubles slot, picking up decisive wins over Texas' Petra Granic/Tijana Spasojevic and Baylor's Paula Baranano/Livia Kraus.
The Valencia, Venezuela native has 103 overall career victories for the Cardinal and Gold, which is the 12th most in school history.
Next up, Iowa State heads to Lawrence, Kansas for the Big 12 Tennis Championships. The Cyclones will being looking for their first win in program history at the tournament when they take on Baylor at 10 a.m. Thursday.
