(Clarinda) -- Another former Clarinda golf great will enter the KMA Sports Hall of Fame this year.
A state individual champion in 1999, Cindy (Whitmore) Alvarez placed in the top four every year during her prolific high school career. She also led the Cardinals to the state team title in 1999.
Alvarez, who teamed with KMA Sports Hall of Famer Kyle Marcum to finish second at co-ed state golf, says it’s still the relationships she cherishes the most.
“The golf and the competition is fun,” she said, “but it’s a unique sport in that you get to really talk with your competitors. I think the friendships and relationships I made through those years are what I keep with me the most.”
Making lifelong relationships through competitive athletics is great, but you don’t get a trophy for that. She did get plenty of those, including the 1999 state championship in her junior season.
“That was an awesome year,” Alvarez said. “I set a goal to try and win the state championship. I qualified the (two previous years), but I wasn’t able to win the state championship. To win (the individual and team title) was icing on the cake. To be on top for both sides was awesome.”
Alvarez finished fourth as a freshman and sophomore, won the state title in her junior season and then took runner-up in her senior season. She says golf was a major part of her life from an early age.
“My dad was the person that introduced me to golf. At first I wasn’t as interested. I had more fun running around and riding in the golf cart. It eventually started in the Clarinda junior golf club and progressed from there.
“I really enjoyed spending my summers out there, and we had a great program. It was nice to have that familiarity with the different golf courses and competitors I would meet down the road from each town.”
Alvarez will join the KMA Sports Hall of Fame at a later date to be determined. Hear the complete interview from today’s Upon Further Review here.
