(Harlan) -- Over the next 20 weekday mornings, KMA Sports will be announcing the inaugural KMA Sports Hall of Fame class. Throughout the 2016-17 sports year, these 20 inductees will have special induction ceremonies, but August is designed for the announcements.
Our first inductee has coached in 14 state volleyball tournaments, won two state championships and influenced the sport in KMAland possibly more than any other person.
Angie Spangenberg began her tremendous 23-year coaching career at Red Oak, directing the Tigers to nine state tournament appearances. In 2011, she took over at Harlan and quickly turned the Cyclones into a power that would play in three state finals and capture two championships.
Along the way, Spangenberg influenced her players through hard work and dedication to the sport. Many of them, including Ankeny Centennial Coach Jess Rinehart, former Stanton Coach J Browning, Charles City assistant Jamie Anderson, her daughter Paige and daughter-in-law Tricia would take up coaching themselves.
"I think one of the most important things you can do as an athlete is when your career is done is give back," Spangenberg told KMA Sports. "I'm proud of the kids that have gone on as adults and are giving back."
Spangenberg's success includes 604 victories and just 144 losses - a Hall of Fame-worthy winning percentage of .807.
"I think it's hard work," Spangenberg said of the success. "It's about learning, and as a coach you never stop learning. You should be the one that outworks everybody else. I think you have a plan and you work with people, and you just build your program from the bottom up."
Even while accumulating all those wins, state appearances and championships, Spangenberg said she couldn't do it without a lot of help.
"I want to thank the people I work with," she said. "They have made such a difference in my life, and I can't imagine my life without coaching a part of it."
Spangenberg will be inducted into the KMA Sports Hall of Fame on September 27th as part of the Red Oak at Harlan volleyball match. All former Spangenberg players are invited to attend.
KMA Sports will announce a new inductee each August weekday morning during the 7:50 AM sportscast.
