(KMAland) -- A two-time state wrestling champion will join the KMA Sports Hall of Fame later this year.
Riverside alum Kyle Canoyer was one of several state champions for the Bulldogs in the mid 1990s, winning titles in 1996 at 112 and 1997 at 125. In 1996, Canoyer and his team also celebrated a team championship.
"We had a lot of talent in the wrestling room at that time," Canoyer said on KMA's Upon Further Review. "I think there were four Division I athletes that came out of that room."
Canoyer was joined by Jimmy Rodgers and Steve Swope as individual champions during the team's run to the '96 championship. While the three didn't tangle that often, the competition was fierce.
"I think what was better about the situation was during competition," Canoyer said. "We were so competitive, you didn't want to see Jimmy or Jeff (Evans) or Steve outdo your performance. It was more healthy competition to help drive us."
And it drove Canoyer to two individual state championships. As a junior, he needed a double overtime to win his first title out of a stacked bracket before winning again as a senior.
"One of the neater situations after my junior year," Canoyer said, "was when Dan Gable came up to us. He went through all of our matches with us and kind of asked what our thoughts were for the future in college. Telling Dan Gable I was going to wrestle at Nebraska was probably one of the tougher things I had to do."
While Canoyer cherishes his two individual state titles, he also holds a special place in his heart for the 1996 team title in which the Bulldogs scored 99 points to win.
"It was really unique," he said. "It was a once in a lifetime deal. To have four kids (go Division I) in a small community like Riverside was unique. We knew it at the time and loved every second of wrestling, working out and just being a part of life together."
Canoyer will be inducted into the wrestling wing of the KMA Sports Hall of Fame at a later date to be determined. To hear the full interview with Canoyer click here.
A KMA Sports Hall of Fame announcement will be made on Upon Further Review at 11:50 AM each weekday until August 28th.
