(Missouri Valley) -- Long-time Griswold coach Gary Bergstrom officially went into the KMA Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday night.

The state championship-winning coach that was known for his "compete, compete, compete" pre-meet speech was inducted during a short ceremony at the Western Iowa Conference track meet in Missouri Valley.

"I'm honored, humbled and appreciative for KMA Radio doing this," Coach Bergstrom said. "I don't think I'm deserving, but I'm very appreciative of it. There are so many great coaches, but I gladly accept the award."

Coach Bergstrom led the Tigers to a state team championship in 2005. They then finished as state runner-up in 2006. During the course of his 37 years at Griswold, the Tigers also had third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place finishes.

Being at the Western Iowa Conference meet brought back some big memories for the former coach.

"We won a few (conference) championships," Bergstrom said. "What I remember is the competitiveness between Griswold and Treynor. We really got after it."

Bergstrom joins Mike Artist (Glenwood), Ray Graves (Shenandoah), Gail Hartigan (Treynor) and Angie Spangenberg (Red Oak/Harlan) as coaches in the KMA Sports Hall of Fame.
