(Rock Port) -- One of the greatest track and field teams in the history of KMAland was inducted into the KMA Sports Hall of Fame Friday night.
Under the direction of legendary head coach Jan Burke, the 2008 state champion Rock Port girls track and field team took 13 athletes to the state meet and came out on top.
The Jays proved to be very strong in the field events, getting state championships from Laura Graybill in the high jump and Kyleigh Parrish in the discus. Their 4x800 team of Elyssa (Ellison) Burke, Abbey Lawrence, Karley Evans, and Leslie (Alitz) Wittmann also ran to a state title.
Other members of the Rock Port team that year included Bailey Anderson, Chelsea Ashford, Stephanie Burge, Hayley Christian, Chelsea Cooper, Kaci Demott, Laura Garst, Emily Graham, Larissa Kirkland, Jessica Salmond, Kori Sheldon, Jordan Thomas, Tanya Thompson, Hanna Vette, Makayla Vette, Kassie Wilson and Rachel Young.
Coach Burke was assisted by Afton Demott and Mandy Raithel.
Also Friday night, the Rock Port School District honored state champion Kyleigh Parrish, who passed away in July of 2015. She was 25. A new Rock Port track record sign was unveiled, and was dedicated to Parrish.
