(KMAland) -- In 1984, the Nishna Valley baseball team became the first Corner Conference team to qualify for the state baseball tournament.
Today, on this month's Where Are They Now Feature, we take a look back at the Blackhawk team, which was guided by coach Dan Stipe and relied heavily on the pitching of Mike Mercer and the hitting of their powerful catcher Bob Douglas.
Mercer and Douglas were the only two seniors on a young squad that knocked off Oakland, Treynor, Sidney, Mormon Trail and East Greene on their way to the four-team Class 1A State Tournament in Marshalltown.
In the feature, KMA Sports talks with Stipe, Mercer, centerfielder Jim Doyle, shortstop Jason Jahnke and rightfielder Lloyd Blank.
