Johnson: Kobe Must Talk With Buss
Thu, 23 Feb 2012 03:01:13

Akpanudosen/Getty Images(DALLAS) -- Former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson said on Tuesday that Kobe Bryant and the Lakers need to sit down with management and address some issues.

Both Bryant and Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak have been firing blows at each other through the media the last couple days about the handling of teammate Pau Gasol's future with Los Angeles, and Johnson says this needs to end.

"We have to remember now, it's not Mitch's situation anymore," said the five-time NBA champion.

"[Kupchak is] not running the team," Johnson said. "Jim Buss is running the team. So, Mitch has to follow the direction of Jim Buss and what he wants. I wouldn't say Mitch is the problem or anything. He's going to do his job."

When Bryant was informed about Johnson saying that the two should sit down and talk, Bryant said, "Perhaps." Bryant added, "Nobody else is going to say it. I'm the only one with cojones big enough to say it, so I said it."

For now, the drama continues into All-Star weekend in Orlando with Pau Gasol still wearing the purple and gold.

"I'm glad we have finally determined the best course of treatment to deal with the problem," Calhoun said. "I'm looking forward to having the procedure done, hopefully recovering as quickly as possible, and putting it all in the past."

Associate head coach George Blaney will continue to be the man in charge on the sidelines until Calhoun returns.

The Huskies' (17-10) are 3-3 since the Hall of Fame coach has been out.

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- New York Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert will not participate in this weekend's All-Star Dunk Contest in Orlando.

Shumpert had been playing with a left knee injury but after last Sunday's win over the Mavericks, the pain became too much to bear.

In an interview on ESPN 1050 New York's The Michael Kay Show, Knicks head coach Mike D'Antoni said Shumpert will be out until after the All-Star break.

Taking his place this weekend in the dunk contest will be Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans.

Thu, 23 Feb 2012 00:00:51

Scott Halleran/Getty Images(MARANA, Arizona) -- Tiger Woods defeated Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship Wednesday, 1 up.

The 14-time major champion took the lead for good on the 16th hole with a par putt.

“I had a hard time reading these greens,” Woods said. “You have the slope of the greens, there is the valley down there but then the grain on the greens isn’t matching up with the valley. Lot of times it goes with the slope of the greens.

Up next for Woods is a second-round match against Nick Watney Thursday.

Meanwhile, top seeded Luke Donald has been sent packing by Ernie Els, 5-and-4. Donald is just the third No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round of the event.

Brady Quinn Criticizes Tim Tebow, then Clarifies Comments
Wed, 22 Feb 2012 18:15:58

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images(DENVER) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow rose from third-string quarterback to playoff hero during the season, but in doing so he may have rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way. In an interview with GQ Magazine, Broncos backup quarterback Brady Quinn vented over "Tebowmania" and all that came with it during this past season.

"I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that," Quinn said regarding Tebow taking over as the starting quarterback. "Just 'cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I don't have any billboards. That would have been nice."

"If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just didn't seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and playing but by praying with my teammates, you know?"

Quinn later retracted his comments that could have come off as overly critical.

"The comments attributed to me in a recent magazine article in NO WAY reflective of my opinion of Tim and the Broncos," Quinn tweeted. "Tim deserves a lot of credit for our success and I'm happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate. The story was conducted three months ago, and the resulting story was a completely inaccurate portrayal of my comments."

Since joining the Broncos before the 2010 season, Quinn has yet to take a snap in a regular season game with the team.

Quarterback Guru Tom Martinez Dead at 66
Wed, 22 Feb 2012 18:13:54

iStockPhot?o/Thinksto?ck(NEW YORK) -- Tom Martinez, the man who helped mold New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady into the player he is today, died Tuesday -- on his 66th birthday.

Martinez, who worked with Brady as recently during the week leading up to the Super Bowl, reportedly died from a heart attack he suffered during a dialysis session.

"He's obviously a great friend of mine and a great friend of my family's, and has been for a long time," Brady said of Martinez before the Super Bowl. "He taught me how to throw the football at a young age. I'm forever indebted to him."

"Talk about a perfectionist, he's a perfectionist and he doesn't let anything slide with me. I owe so much to him. I love him. I love his family. He's got a great family, and I enjoy being with him and working with him."

Last summer, Martinez was given just months to live but managed to fight on; he suffered from kidney and heart problems.
