(KMAland) -- The second of four coaches in the 2018-19 KMA Sports Hall of Fame class was announced on Tuesday.

Former Underwood softball coach Joyce Tiarks is no stranger to Halls of Fame, as she compiled nearly 600 career victories in her legendary career.

“So many great kids that I had the opportunity to coach over the years,” Tiarks said. “Along with that you have parents, officials, other coaches and all the people that are involved in making sports happen.”

Tiarks helped the Eagles qualify for seven state softball tournaments during her coaching tenure, guiding them to the 1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2004 tourneys.

“I think the success goes back to the players,” she said. “We were struggling and didn’t have a lot of sports when I started there.”

Tiarks said when she was a student-athlete at Underwood she played for many of the struggling teams.

“I really wanted the girls to enjoy (success),” Tiarks said. “They got after it and started turning it around right away. The games at state were quite memorable, but I remember thinking we really turned the corner in the ‘80s when we were finally able to beat Griswold and their great coach Raymond Butt.”

“One of the conference tournaments we beat them,” Tiarks added, “and it was like I was honored to beat him. Their teams were so good, and that stands out as an early-on memory.”

Tiarks finished with a career record of 578 wins and 295 losses – an incredible winning percentage of .662.

“We only won seven games both of our first two seasons,” Tiarks said. “When we finally hit a winning season, I believe that was our third season or so, and started beating some of the teams at the top of the conference. That was such a big deal.”

A previous entrant into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame, KMA Sports is proud to welcome Coach Tiarks into our Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony at a later date to be determined.
