BJ Windhorst

(Clarinda) -- Each weekday from now until August 26th, KMA Sports will be announcing the inaugural KMA Sports Hall of Fame class. Throughout the 2016-17 sports year, these 20 inductees will have special induction ceremonies, but August is designed for the announcements.

Today's inductee is a two-time All State basketball player at Clarinda and an All-Missouri Valley Conference performer at Drake. BJ Windhorst is known more now for his coaching exploits, but those that saw him play at Clarinda, Iowa Western and Drake will likely never forget the impact he had on the court.

Windhorst helped the Cardinals to the 1991 state tournament under the late Bill Gilmore before moving on to Iowa Western and then setting multiple records as a Bulldog. His influence on the court at Clarinda, though, is what lands him in the inaugural class of the KMA Sports Hall of Fame.

"I think what I remember most about growing up in Clarinda was just how excited we always were to play every season and compete," Windhorst said. "We were always one of the smaller schools in the (Hawkeye 8), and it was always an easy motivator for us."

Windhorst says he was blessed to be a part of a very talented class at Clarinda and also play with a terrific class one year above and below him.

"We were always competitive," he said. "I remember every season and every sport, seeing how good we could be and if we could compete with the top of the conference every year."

Windhorst has now moved on to the coaching side of things, and most recently led West Des Moines Valley to a Class 4A state championship. That came after previous and successful stints at Clarinda and Southeast Polk.

"I think I've molded a lot of the way I coach around things I remember as a player that I felt didn't work for me as a player," Windhorst said. "Then I've taken many things from many influential coaches along the way. I think I've used both sides of it to become the coach I want to be and continue to be."

Windhorst will be inducted into the inaugural class of the KMA Sports Hall of Fame later this winter on a date to be announced.
