(KMAland) -- The undefeated and nearly untouched Stanton football state champion of 2007 is the first of four teams set to be announced for the 2017-18 class of the KMA Sports Hall of Fame.

The Vikings went 13-0 in 2007, winning by an average margin of 43.08 points per game.

Coach Don Hicks' team faced a tight test with Walnut in the final week of the regular season, but they weren't tested again until a 32-24 win over Armstrong-Ringsted in the 8-Man final.

"Our kids were outstanding," Coach Hicks said on KMA's Upon Further Review Tuesday, "and the kids behind them were outstanding also. We had a lot of teams say our second team would have been second in the district, and I have to agree with that."

Hicks detailed a fast and physical line with outstanding running and receiving threats behind the heady play of quarterback Chris Palmquist.

"At center we had Cam Lewellen," he said. "Corey Meier, Brett Sink and Jeremy Oltmanns played guard at different times. We had a very fast line with good size."

"Alex McAardle, Alex Cabbage and Grant Focht were the ends and receivers, and Palmquist was an outstanding quarterback. In the backfield, we had Ben Snyder and Nate Elwood."

And then all over the place was sophomore Alex Whigham, who would go on to set multiple state records for points, touchdowns, receptions and receiving yardage.

"He was just so potent," Hicks said. "Teams started double-teaming him because he was such a threat. So we started figuring out how to get him the ball more often and put him at slot back and running back."

The Vikings took their dominance to the UNI-Dome when they blasted Lenox to the tune of 78-14 in the state semifinal.

"They played unbelievable," Hicks said. "At halftime, I went into the locker room and just said, 'Wow! What do we do in the second half?' My main concern was just not getting anybody hurt."

Stanton stayed healthy and went on to win a classic battle with Tyler Tonderum and Armstrong-Ringsted to complete the magical season.

The Stanton team will be inducted into the KMA Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, September 15th as part of a special 10-year reunion. More details will be revealed in the future.
